In the last decade of the 20th century, the transformation in the Italian public administration stimulated a reflection focused on library management, which fostered the rooting of a result-oriented professional culture. The penetration of management into librarianship aimed at pointing library institutions towards effectiveness and represented the attempt to provide librarians with tools adequate to face the deep changes of the social and cultural context. Moving from Giovanni Solimine’s most representative studies of the time, the article tries to reflect about the legacy of library management nowadays, when change has become an immanent condition.
