This paper presents an interview with Dr. Niko Cvetković, Director of the new public library in Rijeka, Croatia (Gradska knjižnica Rijeka, GKR), conducted at the library on 24 April 2024. Regarded as a pioneering model within the European context, the new library is housed in an architecturally striking building in the city centre, surrounded by greenery. Among the guiding principles behind its design are the optimisation of librarians’ time, the “humanisation” of their profession, and the delegation of routine, mechanical tasks—such as lending, returns, and shelving—to automated systems.
Inaugurated in December 2023 within a repurposed, formerly abandoned industrial facility, GKR distinguishes itself through its dynamic, unconventional, and distinctly non-bureaucratic style of communication, both on-site and across digital platforms—an approach that has contributed to the development of a recognisable institutional brand. Following a successful pilot phase, the library has implemented an open and inclusive policy that clearly separates areas intended for study from those designated for play, leisure, and social interaction. This strategy has successfully brought together diverse user groups and age cohorts.
Restrictions such as enforced silence and prohibitions on consuming beverages are thus confined exclusively to research rooms, without resulting in any significant financial drawbacks. On the contrary, this approach has lowered barriers to access and fostered a welcoming environment for both citizens and curious visitors. While the model continues to evolve, its outcomes to date have exceeded expectations, garnering unanimous approval from users, staff, and policy makers alike.
