Abstract

This paper explores the evolution of librarian training and career entry in Italy between 1861 and 1921, highlighting how these pathways contributed to shaping the professional identity of librarians. By examining legislation, job announcements, and contemporary professional literature, the study reveals a landscape marked by persistent structural uncertainty, despite a lively and multifaceted bibliographic and professional debate. The historical perspective is offered as a lens through which to interpret current challenges in the field - from job insecurity and role ambiguity to the declining appeal of the profession among younger generations - suggesting that many of these issues may be rooted in long-standing, unresolved systemic problems.
