Research data management in university libraries: lifecycle-oriented practices, strategies, challenges, and demographic correlates

Abstract

Scholarly discourse on research data management (RDM) has addressed the exponential growth of research data, yet gaps remain regarding practices when examined through the lens of the data lifecycle and in relation to librarians’ personal factors. Anchored in the knowledge-based view (KBV), this study empirically investigates lifecycle-oriented practices, strategies, challenges, and demographic correlates of research data management practices (RDMP) among library personnel across the three southern geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive correlational research design and used a structured questionnaire to collect data from a target population of 137 library professionals. A 78% response rate was achieved, and the data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed a moderate level of RDMP in university libraries. Core strategies for the effective implementation of RDMP include library management involvement, capacity building, and the institutionalisation of RDM policies. Challenges such as poor funding, inadequate data infrastructure, and skills gaps constrain RDMP. The study also found that highest educational qualification and years of experience had a statistically significant but very weak relationship with RDMP among university library personnel. The study provides empirical evidence for applying KBV to RDMP in university libraries, indicating that library professionals, as critical knowledge assets, can be supported to improve RDMP. It further highlights the relevance of other factors, such as organisational systems, managerial cognition, and coordination, as institutional strategies for enhancing RDMP. The study concludes that management support, infrastructure, and personnel capacity are crucial for advancing RDMP in university libraries in the southern region of Nigeria.
