The article examines the results of the latest ISTAT report on reading in Italy in 2010 and 2011, analyzes the data relating to the e-book market provided in June 2012 by the Italian Publishers Association, and reflects on the predominance of women among books' purchasers and consumers. Taking into consideration the transformations occurred in the way people plan their lives and leisure time, in the conclusion a few strategic suggestions are made to Italian public libraries.
