Abstract

The paper analyzes the role and impact of public libraries in contemporary society as it has been discussed in AIB studi during the last two years.
Among the most relevant topics to the present and to the future: libraries as social laboratories; the promotion of public library services for information literacy, lifelong learning and critical thinking skills; the involvement of public libraries in the development of digital citizenship; the welfare and public libraries in the age of crisis; a methodologically sound approach to social librarianship.
