The Internet culturale collection Periodici e riviste preunitarie: current conditions and future implementations

Abstract

Among the early digitization projects realized by the Biblioteca digitale italiana the main strategy of combining library collections and digitization in Italy, there was the collection Periodici e riviste preunitarie, characterized by the scanning of over seventy historical journals dating back to before the unification of Italy. After the repository presentation and an overview of the main access ways, the essay returns a list of the individual periodic presences identified and analyzes the main critical issues found in metadata associated with digitizations and characterized by descriptive and technical défaillance. Also digging among the main European experiences, the contribution, tries to think about the synergic applications that this repository and the periodical material could have with the Italian digital Emeroteca and the new portal of Italian libraries and cultural institutes.
