This paper focuses on the role of the public sector information, seen as the most relevant form of accountability for a democratic state, crucial for citizens to be able to take informed decisions in their lives. The paper stresses also the role of public administration publications in the complex world of public sector information and describes the evolution of the availability and the access to these resources. The author analyzes the evolving scenario of Italian public sector information of the last twenty years, the e-government transition and the issues still to be faced. In particular, the author notes a discontinuity in the publication and making available by institutions of this type of documents and analyzes the reasons. Lastly, the article underlines the importance of information literacy and civic information literacy for communities’ development and digital well-being.
