Abstract

The characteristics of the UNI 11535:2023 standard describing the library professional are illustrated. A periodical revision is routine procedure of the Italian Organization for Standardization (UNI): each technical standard is periodically subject to revision. Though retaining the original structure and articulation, the text is modified according to the evolution of Italian and international regulations. Consequently, the main innovations introduced in this edition are related to: the introduction of the concept of autonomy and responsibility, the assignment of the eighth professional level, the close connection to the regulations defined by AIB on the requirements for access, validation, and revalidation of its associates’ membership.

The article also traces back some meaningful moments of the way towards professional recognition, with reference to AIB context and to Law no. 4/2013, highlighting how the rules on unregulated professions have in fact made it possible to create a synergy between legislation, technical standards, and the role of associations.
