Is the book the only possible vessel to sail to ‘culture’? Statistical data demonstrate that readers are ‘weak’ or do not read at all. And yet, contemporary readers actually do ‘read’ also the net and social networks, videos and videogames, TV series and music. The list is astonishingly long. Furthermore any kind of ‘reading’ is interwoven with others in a complex, pluralistic, ‘horizontal’, rhizome. The so- called ‘third mission’ is therefore a duty that scholars have to fulfill towards society as a whole. It is time to imagine and use other interpretative tools to analyze and direct a new idea of ‘culture’ towards new horizons.
